A client from Los Gatos contacted California Car Sounds and Tint to inquire about a 2017 Audi R8 laser defense and radar detection system. He was looking for a shop that would be able to install his AL Priority system without cutting up or damaging his new car. He wanted a neat and tidy installation that was as concealed as possible. We talked to the client about our experience with radar detection and laser defense system installations and reviewed where and how we could mount the laser sensors on his vehicle. Confident that we could perform the installation to his expectations, he gave us the go-ahead to schedule an installation date.
Front Grille Sensor Mount
We started by removing the front bumper from this gorgeous new R8. We have a large painters’ rack that is wrapped in soft carpet to hold body parts and panels while we work on them. The carpet prevents scratches or scuffs. We used an aluminum bar to span the width of the bumper so that we would be sure the alignment of the two laser sensors would be perfect. We trimmed the included sensor mounting brackets and used pop rivets to secure them in place. We finished everything in matte black paint to help conceal it. The placement of the sensors allows the receiving and transmitting functions to work through the hexagonal openings in the lower front grille.
Warning LED Mount
The AL Priority system includes a multicolor information and warning LED to let the driver know what mode the system is in, and when there is an alert. We removed the trim panel around the steering wheel column and drilled a hole for the LED indicator. We secured the LED in place and ran the wiring to the central control unit before reassembling the dash trim. The LED is the only visible component of the entire system from the driver’s seat.
Radar Receiver and Additional Component Installation.
The system includes a radar receiver module that we mounted in the center of the vehicle behind the plastic bumper cover. The cover does not affect the performance of the radar system. The system control panel is located in the center console and the GPS antenna is at the top of the dash with a clear view of the sky through the steeply raked windshield. We mounted the speaker for the system under the dash and pointed it downwards. It is completely out of the way so that the client’s feet will not bump into it as he gets in and out of the vehicle. We wrapped all of the system wiring in cloth tesa tape to mimic the look of the factory wiring.
