A client from San Francisco recently visited California Car Sounds and Tint in Campbell to inquire about a 2004 Porsche 996 subwoofer system upgrade. He had a sub in the car already and didn’t mind the way it sounded. The enclosure was held in place with a cargo strap, giving it a less-than-desirable look in such a nice car. Another concern was that his kids, who are often in the back seat, could be injured if the enclosure were to come loose in the event of an accident. We had a look at the vehicle and talked to the client about what he wanted the system to look and sound like. After listening to several speaker options in our showroom, we put together a plan to make his Porsche 911 look and sound great.
JL Audio Porsche 996 Subwoofer Solution
After taking a set of careful measurements, our fabrication team created a new subwoofer enclosure for the Porsche. The guys used ¾-inch MDF to create a three-chamber enclosure for a pair of JL 6W6v3 6.5-inch subwoofers. These subwoofers don’t require a great deal of space to perform. As such, each sub is in an enclosure that’s volume optimized to balance low-frequency output and physical power handling. The center chamber of the enclosure exists only to give the system a clean and symmetrical look in the vehicle. That said, if the client ever wants to add another pair of subs, the enclosure is big enough!
Enclosure Vehicle Integration
With the enclosure construction complete, we rounded over all the corners before wrapping it in black trunk-liner carpet. The carpet helps the enclosure blend into the vehicle in terms of cosmetics.
The fabrication team created a set of aluminum mounting brackets for the new subwoofer enclosure. The brackets are secured to the vehicle using factory fastener locations. They slipped the subwoofer enclosure into place, then bolted it to the brackets using small holes in the bottom of the cabinet. Once secure, they installed the subwoofers and added a set of SGRU-6 steel mesh grilles to protect the drivers.
Porsche Audio System Upgrade
With everything installed, our technicians fine-tuned the existing amplifier to work with the new speakers. We gave the system a thorough test for buzzes and rattles and made sure it sounded as amazing as it looks. With everything wrapped up, it was time for the client to check out the new Porsche 996 subwoofer system. He was thrilled with the way it looks and impressed that a small pair of subwoofers could produce that much bass.
