If you own an iPhone and are looking for the latest in CarPlay technology, then drop into California Car Sounds and Tint to check out the new Alpine iLX-107. Introduced at the 2017 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the iLX-107 is the first aftermarket source unit to feature wireless Apple CarPlay connectivity. Let’s take a closer look at what the iLX-107 can offer you.
Alpine iLX-107 Platform
The iLX-107 is based around a 7-inch touch screen. The display uses capacitive-touch technology, similar to your iPhone. It senses the placement of your finger and offers a crystal-clear view of the 800 by 480-pixel display that will show all your information. Alpine has included volume, track selection, a Siri and a Home button on the minimalist front panel.
The new iLX-107 includes an RBDS AM/FM receiver to display station and song information in FM mode. An Aux input allows you to connect a third-party device like an Android phone, portable media player, portable DVD player or a stand-alone satellite radio receiver. This will enable you to enjoy your audio and video on the main screen. Of course, the vehicle needs to be stopped, and the parking brake must be set to watch video.
Wireless Apple CarPlay
Up until now, using Apple CarPlay meant that you needed to connect a Lighting Cable to the bottom of your phone. This wired connection handles audio, video and data transfer between your iPhone and the source unit. Wireless CarPlay uses a WiFi connection to transmit data between the system and the phone. There is no longer a need to connect a cable. This feature is awesome if you are in-and-out of your vehicle several times a day. The system automatically reconnects without pressing any buttons.
CarPlay provides an intuitive and safe way to make and receive phone calls and text messages. You can use Apple Maps to get turn-by-turn directions that use real-time traffic flow information to get you to your destination quickly and efficiently. Listen to your choice of music by simply asking for a song title, artist or album name. CarPlay makes use of Apple’s Siri interface to let you keep your eyes on the road and your hands on the steering wheel.
CarPlay is compatible with third party applications like Spotify, iHeartRadio, Pandora and several Podcast applications. Visit Apple’s CarPlay website for details.
Connectivity Options
Information about your vehicle can be displayed right on the screen using an optional iDatalink Maestro RR vehicle interface. The iLX-107 also includes 2-volt front, rear and subwoofer preamp outputs to allow for system expansion. Crossovers, equalization and time alignment settings are adjustable using the Alpine TuneIt app on your cell phone. The iLX-107 is compatible with conventional steering wheel control interfaces and will accept a backup camera input.
