A client from San Jose recently visited California Car Sounds and Tint in Campbell about some 2018 RAM 3500 safety and technology upgrades. He wanted a camera system that would help him see around his truck while driving or parking, and an easy-to-use source unit. We showed the client several options and explained how we could integrate them into his vehicle. He liked our plan and gave us the go-ahead to schedule an appointment.
Custom RAM 3500 Safety System
The safety system we designed for this monster RAM includes four cameras. We replaced the factory tailgate handle with the Echomaster PCAM-RAM system. The PCAM-RAM includes an IP67-rated CMOS camera that offers excellent low-light sensitivity and a wide field of vision. This rear camera connects directly to the rear vision camera input on the new radio.
We mounted the second camera, this time from Advent, in the front bumper on an aluminum bracket that our fabrication team created. This camera faces forward and downward to let the driver see any obstacles or people that might be in front of the truck. We installed a switch on the dash of the truck that allows the driver to display this camera anytime he wants.
Blind Spot Assist Camera System
We mounted the next two cameras, also Advent ACA501 units, on the undersides of the side mirrors. The cameras face rearward at a 45-degree angle. This alignment allows the driver to see any vehicle that might be hiding in his blind spot. Our technicians used a PAC Audio VS41 camera switching module to interface the side cameras with the new radio. When the driver activates the turn signal, the associated camera image displays automatically on the screen of the radio.
We securely fastened all the camera wiring to existing wire harnesses in the truck, and any electrical connections were properly protected to ensure that the system functions reliably.
Alpine Restyle Source Unit
To display the camera images clearly, the client wanted a clear screen in the dash of the RAM. We looked at several stand-alone monitor solutions and then suggested the Alpine Restyle X009-RAM radio replacement. This replacement infotainment system is based on a massive 9-inch touch screen and includes an entirely new dash trim panel. Alpine has integrated many of the controls for the radio into the new dash piece. The factory climate system controls and accessory switches bolt right into the new trim piece. The result is a factory-like look with amazing new features and a massive screen.
The X009-RAM includes Bluetooth hands-free and audio streaming functions, as well as a built-in HD Radio receiver, a CD/DVD mechanism and support for iPod and iPhone music playback. The X009-RAM also features a built-in turn-by-turn navigation system with maps of the entire country, including Alaska and Hawaii, as well as maps of Canada. The system includes 3-D maps and the ability to show major landmarks and buildings in urban areas in 3-D. Alpine has included a lifetime subscription to the Traffic Message Channel so the system will indicate when there is congestion and help the client get around it quickly.
Upgrade Your Safety at California Car Sounds and Tint
With all of the cameras installed in the truck, the last step was to make sure that we aimed each one perfectly and that the system performed flawlessly. We went through all the permutations of how the system would be used, and it passed with flying colors!
The client returned to California Car Sounds and Tint in Campbell to see the RAM 3500 safety system and new head unit for the first time. We showed him how the cameras worked, then explained the key operational features of the X009-RAM. Of course, we paired his phone with the radio and made a test-call to verify that everything was working perfectly.
