What is Lidar and How Do I Protect Myself From It?

August 7, 2019 By Staff Leave a Comment

LidarLet’s take a look at how the latest lidar defense systems from California Car Sounds and Tint can protect you against the radar and laser systems used by the San Jose police. While we don’t condone breaking any driving laws, getting a speeding ticket while passing a vehicle on a two-lane road or missing a speed limit sign behind a truck is frustrating. Our lidar defense systems can help. Here’s how.

How Does Police Lidar Work?

A lidar gun transmits a very narrow pulsing beam of light at an object. The gun looks for that light to be reflected back and measures the time it takes to calculate the distance very accurately. After taking a few measurements (often in less than 1/3 of a second), the gun calculates that change in distance and displays the vehicle speed. Unlike radar guns, lidar guns operate with impressive precision, allowing officers to pick out a single vehicle, even in heavy traffic.

How Do Our Lidar Defense Systems Work?

If we have installed an Escort, K40 or AL Priority lidar defense system on your vehicle, you will see several sensors installed in the front grille. These sensors detect the measurement signal from the police lidar gun and transmit randomly spaced pulses to prevent the officer from obtaining a speed reading. You will receive an audible and visual warning inside the vehicle and be able to slow down to a safe speed quickly, then cancel the scrambled transmission.

The speed and efficiency with which you complete the process of slowing down and canceling the transmission are key to your evading a speeding ticket. If you drive past an officer with the defense system still operative, he may choose to follow you and measure your speed another way. We suggest smooth and effective braking, then cancelling the transmission so the officer can take a reading and let you carry on your way.

Proper Installation Ensures High Performance

LidarWhile the hardware required to protect our clients against police lidar is simple in concept, integrating it into a vehicle for proper performance takes specific training and skills. Our team will start by examining your vehicle to determine how many sensors will be required to deliver reliable coverage. If you are traveling in an area that uses DragonEye lidar guns, we’ll suggest adding additional sensors.

Next, our technicians will integrate those sensors into your vehicle in a way that not only looks great but ensures that the sensors function reliably. How the sensors are aligned and where they are placed on the vehicle relative to the ground and each other are crucial to the reliable performance of the system.

Our team will also consult with each client on an appropriate mounting location for any displays or controls required in the interior of the vehicle. We can create trim panels or mounting pods for a neat and tidy installation, as though it were an option from the factory. We’ll make sure everything is easy to understand and operate.

Protect Yourself with a Lidar Defense System

If you are concerned about speeding tickets, drop by California Car Sounds and Tint in Campbell and ask our team about having a radar detector and lidar defense system installed in your vehicle. Alternatively, give us a call or send an e-mail to schedule a personal consultation.
